Contact Info for Seward Products (guages and switches)

Seward Products was sold but the electric panels, harnesses, and parts (gages, switches, etc.) were not purchased by Whale.  Instead, Dennis Igarashi, previously with Seaward has setup his own business in the factory in Whittier, CA.  He builds the panels and harnesses for Catalina, and makes replacement panels for older Catalina boat owners with an occasional custom panel for some Catalina boat owners.  He also carries most of the replacement parts for them as well.

He has proved to be very helpful to us in the past so if you need replacement parts or even a new custom panel, give him a call:

Adler/Barbour Troubleshooting – Fridge

Adler/Barbour Troubleshooting (and Waeco 50, 80, and 90 series)

By: Jacob

These units are simple to troubleshoot, but if for some reason you don’t feel comfortable, or you don’t have the proper equipment, we have a large distributor/dealer network to handle issues in the field. Go to Cruisair.com and find a dealer. Choose your state/location. WHAT IS ON THE WEBSITE IS THE DISTRIBUTORS. THEY MAY BE IN ANOTHER STATE OR A COUPLE HUNDRED MILES AWAY. HOWEVER, IF YOU CONTACT THEM, THEY CAN REFER YOU TO A DEALER LOCATED NEAR YOUR BOAT.

This is a simple troubleshooting guide I’ve made up myself to help when your system is not performing correctly. These are just some scenarios I encounter everyday, and figured I’d put them in this simple, layman’s terms troubleshooting guide. Before you start, there are a couple things you may need to identify. The Coldmachines produced now contain two PC

Loose Rudder – Teflon Film Solution

The idea is to let the rudder down a few inches….maybe 4 or 5″….and insert a shim around the post, on top of the rudder, then jack or lever the rudder back up in place.  Several here have done this….I used 0.015″ thick, about 3″ wide…..it’s lasted at least 6 years & still is good.

I was able to do this without disconnecting anything, although some have disconnected autopilot mechanism and/or quadrant.

Also did narrower band in upper bearing, mostly by “stuffing”.

Teflon sheets- carried by Small Parts, Inc, Miami Lakes, FL (305)-557-8222, but they may not be in business anymore. I ordered 0.005″, 0.015″, and 0.030″, applied to base and top of rudder shaft with salt water grease (strips about 3″ high after dropping the rudder slightly using car jack support), as a temporary fix for the season. Total job took 15 minutes. This

Cleaning interior window shades

Hi All,

I noticed last season, that most of my pleated window shades were starting to look dirty and had lots of black mildew and bug stains on them.  Replacing them is expensive.

I found an easy way to have them looking like new.

Remove them, fill a bathtub with about 4″ of HOT water, some laundry detergent and about 2 cups of real liquid bleach.  Mix it up well then put the shades in to soak (opened up).  I swished them around gently and let them soak for about 45 min with an occasional light agitation.

After a few good rinsings with cold water I dried them in the sun.  All the mildew spots are gone. They look like new now and I got a chance to really clean the cabin roof where they attach.

It would be great to know if there is anything I could spray

Tachometer Acting Up

My tachometer started acting up.
At engine idle it would read zero revs and as you slowly open the throtlle the revs jump up to 3500 and then settles around 4000 with the engine probably at 2800 or so which is where we usually cruise.

I looked at the sender unit, pulled the wires off and noted significant corrosion. Cleaned terminal with fine emery paper and sprayed liberally with Corrosion Block. Restarted engine and to my relief the problem was fixed with tach behaving normally.

I am thinking of spending some time with the engine and doing that with all the electrical connections. Sooner or later they will all corrode.

BTW I replaced the oil pressure sensor (very surpising but it was only about $9.50) and the engine oil warning light and buzzer are working normally again.

Head: Fresh Water Flush

I use the head sink drain as a source of fresh water for flushing the head. I added a Y diverter valve to the head inlet hose. In one direction the valve connects toward the existing head inlet thru hull, and in the other direction it connects toward the sink drain hose. Also added a one-way fitting to the sink drain hose just above the thru-hull so lake water can’t be sucked in when flushing. In fresh water mode I turn on the sink faucet, let the sink fill a bit, and then flush the head. If I want to use lake water (or salt water in your case) turn the valve in the other direction. Works well.

We fresh water flush on my 387 but didn’t change any plumbing at all. Simply close the seawater intake through-hull so you don’t suck in saltwater

Mattress Replacement

In 2004, I got a Tempurpedic mattress custom shaped to replace the original from Tempur Marine, which is apparently now Artisan’s Mattress http://www.artisansmattress.com/ .  Some of the best boat bucks I have ever spent.  Still loving it today.

Antifreeze Types

Jeff mentions “OATs” so I thought I would elaborate

(The bolding and underlining are mine and may relate to the sludge some of us have found in our heat exchangers.)

“Automotive antifreeze/coolant is made of ethylene glycol, water, and a chemical additive package. For many years, there was only one type of antifreeze on the market, conventional green. Antifreeze technology has become significantly more complex in the last several years with the introduction of Dexcool and other extended life antifreeze formulas. Currently, there are three main types of antifreeze on the market. They all contain an ethylene glycol base, water, dye and an additive package. What makes them different is the additive package.

Conventional green antifreeze formulations usually contain a number of inorganic corrosion inhibitors that provide immediate corrosion protection because they maintain the pH of the solution (buffer it), but are consumed or transformed chemically as they perform their

Changing Antifreeze on Yanmar

The below advice, from Mack Boring, is for the Yanmar 3GM30F, but is essentially the same procedure for most engines:

“Coolant Change – Yanmar 3GM30FC (Japan, circa 1999)Coolant Change – Yanmar 3GM30FC (Japan, circa 1999)

Background:

Yanmar accepts the following antifreeze applications in their products, present and past models:

  • Ethylene glycol-Changed annually regardless of hours of operation.
  • Extended Life Antifreeze or Coolant (Meets or exceeds ASTM D3306 & D4985) Changed every two years or 250 hours whichever comes first.
  • Yanmar Ultralife YG30
  • Dex-Cool Long Lfe Coolant
  • Havoline Extended Life Antifreeze

Benefits of extended life coolants:

  • reduces hard scale build up
  • better heat transfer
  • no phosphate or silicate formation
  • long term corrosion protection for aluminum, bronze and cast iron
  • improved water pump life
